Computer Inventory Software

IF YOUR COMPUTER DOES NOT HAVE THE INVENTORY AGENT INSTALLED BY FRIDAY, DEC. 17, 2010 IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR REFRESH.

ITS is asking for your help in continuing to refine an accurate and comprehensive inventory of all computers associated with the UNC Asheville campus. This inventory will help us identify which computers should be refreshed/replaced and also for tracking warranty information on UNC Asheville computers.

This inventory is not limited to machines provided by ITS, but to any and all computers obtained through the University and/or purchased with University (or associated, i.e grant) funds. This includes all academic and administrative departments as well as units such as Athletics and the Reuter's Center. Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible so as to get the most realistic view of the computing environment of the UNC Asheville community.

A very small piece of software, the inventory agent, needs to be installed on all UNC Asheville computers on campus to populate this inventory. The inventory agent does not track personal information about you except to note that you are the person using a particular computer. This information will aid us in determining which individuals on campus have a computer that might need replacement. Those people who received a new computer as part of past years' refresh projects should already have the inventory agent installed, but we're asking that you run the installation again to confirm that your machine is associated with you in the inventory.

The inventory agent has already been installed in the computer labs, classrooms, and other ITS managed "public" computers. We need your help installing the inventory agent software on any UNC Asheville computers that you use on a regular basis - especially the workstation in your office, but also computers in your research lab, student assistant computers in your department, etc.

Please install the inventory agent at your earliest opportunity. We will be collecting inventory data through Friday, Dec. 17, 2010.

Windows PCs

  1. Download the Inventory Agent.
  2. When prompted, "Save" the file to a location that is easy to find, such as your Desktop.
  3. Once the download is complete, double-click the "Install_OCS-InventoryAgent_4032Silent.exe" icon.
  4. You will see a small, blue-gray circle "A" icon in your System Tray (the bottom right corner of the screen, where the clock is) while the agent is installing. You may see an image briefly on your screen that says "OCS-NG Inventory" - this is perfectly normal.*
  5. Once the "A" icon is gone from your system tray the agent is finished installing. This usually takes less than 30 seconds.
  6. You can delete the "Install_OCS-InventoryAgent_4032Silent.exe" icon/file once installation is complete. You don't need it once the agent is installed.
  7. Unfortunately we don't have a way to automatically give feedback when you get into the database. If you want to confirm that the inventory agent is installed look for a "C:\Program Files\ OCS Inventory Agent" folder on your computer. If this directory exists the inventory agent is installed.

* NOTE: If you get a window with the message "You do not have the Administrator-level permissions required to run this program." please send an email to helpdesk@unca.edu with your name and the location of the computer you were trying to install the agent on. We'll have someone come and install the agent for you.

Mac OS

  1. Download the the Inventory Agent.
  2. When prompted, select "Save to Disk" and click OK. The file should be saved to your Desktop, making it easy to find.
  3. Locate the file ("OCS Inventory-Mac-UNCA.pkg.zip") and double-click to Open it. NOTE: If you get an error message (Error #17535), close the Error window, then do "CTRL + Click" (or right-click) on the file for additional options. Go to "open with..." in the window that comes up, and select "BOMArchiveHelper".
  4. Once the file has been unzipped, you should see an icon for it ("OCS Inventory-Mac-UNCA.pkg") on your Desktop, resembling an open box. Double-click the icon to begin installation.
  5. On the next screen, click "Continue".
  6. You will see that the application will be installed on your Hard Drive. Click "Continue" again.
  7. On the next screen, click "Install".
  8. At this point, you may be asked for the password for your account on your Mac. If you know your password, enter it now and click OK.**
  9. You will be prompted to Restart your computer in order to complete the installation process.
  10. After your machine has rebooted you can delete the "OCS Inventory-Mac-UNCA.pkg" icon/file from your Desktop. You don't need it once the agent is installed.
  11. Unfortunately we don't have a way to automatically give feedback when you get into the database, but if you are on campus and using a wired connection you should be fine.

* NOTE: If you are prompted for your password but don't know what it is, or if you aren't prompted for your password and are still unable to install the application, please send an email to helpdesk@unca.edu with your name and the location of the computer you were trying to install the agent on. We'll have someone come and install the agent for you.

Please Note

  • DO NOT install this inventory agent on your personal equipment, only UNC Asheville owned/purchased/leased computers.
  • Download and install the agent on campus to avoid any potential firewall problems. For best results use a wired connection.
  • Installing the agent multiple times on the same computer will not hurt anything.
  • Once installed, the agent runs silently in the background.

Thank you very much for your participation. This past year we refreshed over 350 computers across campus through this project and your participation in this first step ensures that your computer is appropriately considered when decisions are made on which machines to refresh.
