Student Personal Computers
What kind of computer should I buy before coming to UNC Asheville?
Currently there is no "standard" for student computers on campus, these decisions are largely driven by the student's major and personal preference.
Your best course of action will be to contact the department(s) you will be studying with to see if they have any suggestions regarding computer hardware and software they might find useful.
ITS does not sell or support student hardware. Student Technical Services and ResNet are peer-oriented services where student workers assist other students with software issues (viruses, installing software, etc). In the case of hardware problems we must refer the student back to the manufacturer as those issues are covered under warranty. If the machine is not under warranty we can refer you to a selection of local computer repair shops.
If it helps in your decision-making process, UNC Asheville uses Apple and Dell machines for our faculty, staff, and labs. You may want to review the specifications for those computers to give you an idea of what we use.
If you are a UNC Asheville student needing technical assistance with your personal computer contact Student Technical Services.
