Wireless Access
802.11g wireless access is currently available in the following areas:
- Ramsey Library
- Highsmith Union
- Brown Hall
- Reuter Center

- Owen Hall

Connecting to Wireless Network (UNC Asheville Faculty, Staff and Students)
You can connect to UNC Asheville Wireless with Wi-Fi capable computers, PDAs, and smartphones. Please see the instructions that came with your device for specifics on getting connected. Please note that while we are happy to assist in getting you connected to campus wireless, ITS does not otherwise support personally owned equipment.
Faculty and Staff
- Connect to the "FacStaff" wireless network.
- When prompted by your device, provide your UNC Asheville Security Account username and password.
- Based on your operating system, please follow the appropriate configuration instructions found below.
Students
- Connect to the "Student" wireless network.
- When prompted by your device, provide your UNC Asheville Security Account username and password.
- Based on your operating system, please follow the appropriate configuration instructions found below.
Additional Configuration Instructions (UNC Asheville Faculty, Staff and Students)
Windows 8:
- Select the “Desktop” icon from the Windows 8 Start Menu.
- Right click on the wireless icon located in the lower right corner and select “Open Network and Sharing Center.”
- Select “Set up a new connection or network.”
- Choose “Manually connect to a wireless network” and click “Next.”
- Enter the following:
Network name: student (or facstaff)
Security type: WPA-Enterprise
Encryption type: TKIP
Click Next - Select "Change connection settings"
- Navigate to the Security tab
- Choose "Microsoft: Protected EAP" for the network authentication method
- Click Settings next to the selected authentication method
- UNCHECK "Validate Server Certificate"
- Below, choose "Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as the Authentication Method
- Click "Configure" and UNCHECK the box for "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password..."
- Next select “Advanced Settings”
- Check “Specify authentication mode.”
- Select “User Authentication” from the drop-down menu and then click on “save credentials”
- Enter your username and password then click “OK”.
- Exit the configuration and connect to the wireless.
Windows 7:
- Open "Manage Wireless Networks"
- Click "Add"
- Select "Manually create a network profile"
- Enter the following:
Network name: student (or facstaff)
Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
Encryption type: AES - Click Next
- Select "Change connection settings"
- Navigate to the Security tab
- Choose "Microsoft: Protected EAP" for the network authentication method
- Click Settings next to the selected authentication method
- UNCHECK "Validate Server Certificate"
- Below, choose "Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as the Authentication Method
- Click "Configure" and UNCHECK the box for "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password..."
- Next select “Advanced Settings”
- Check “Specify authentication mode.”
- Select “User Authentication” from the drop-down menu and then click on “save credentials”
- Enter your username and password then click “OK”.
- Exit the configuration and connect to the wireless.
Windows XP:
- Open "Wireless Network Connections"
- Choose to configure the Wireless Network Connection Properties for the network to which you are connecting
- On the Association tab, select WPA2 for network authentication
- Navigate to the Authentication tab and choose "Protected EAP (PEAP)" from the drop-down by EAP type
- Select properties and UNCHECK "Validate Server Certificate"
- Below, choose "Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) as the Authentication Method
- Click "Configure" and UNCHECK the box for "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password..."
- Exit the configuration and click the wireless bubble that appears in the system tray to log in
Mac OS X (all versions)
- Choose "Continue" after joining the network to dismiss the security warning

iOS (iPad and iPhone)
- Open the Settings app then tap Wi-Fi to view wireless configuration options
- Make sure Wi-Fi is toggled ON, then tap the network name appropriate to your role. Students should choose the "student" network. Faculty and staff should choose the "facstaff" network.
- Enter your UNCA username and password then tap Join
- Tap Accept when asked to verify the security certificate

Guest Wireless Services
- Connect to the "Guest" wireless network
- Campus guests must contact their sponsoring departments for guest login credentials.
